Terpenes 101
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are the primary components of the essential oils in many plants, flowers and fruit. They are attributed to each cannabis strain’s unique scent, flavor and experience. Linalool, for example, is the terpene that exists in abundance in lavender creating a relaxing experience.
Terpenes are found naturally in high concentrations in the cannabis plant. Each cannabis strain has a distinct blend of terpenes that offers a unique experience that includes scent and flavour. Terpenes are strong contributors to the restfulness of some strains and the invigorating nature of others. Some terpenes assist in the uptake or bioavailability of the cannabinoids existing in the body.
What are some specific terpenes?
Linalool: Linalool is associated with the sweet smell of wildflowers. It's found in lavender, laurel birch and rosewood. Linalool is shown to have anti-anxiety, anti-epleptic and antidepressant properties. Many people report feeling calming, sedating and mood-boosting effects. You can find Linalool in strains such as Lavender, LA Confidential and Master Kush.
Terpineol: Terpineol is associated with lilac blossoms. It's found in lilacs, lime and eucalyptus sap. Terpineol is shown to have antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties, as well as sedative effects. Strains high in Terpineol include Jack Herer, Gril Scout Cookies and OG Kush.
Pinene: Pinene is associated with the classic cannabis pine aroma. It's found in pine, basil, parsley and dill. Pinene reportedly offers anti-inflammatory benefits, along with memory improvement, and helping to open airways. Increased alertness is a commonly reported effect. You'll find Pinene in the strains Pineapple Express, ACDC, Grape Ape and Snoops Dream.
Caryophyllene: Caryophyllene is associated pepper. It's found in basil, oregano, pepper and cinnamon. Caryophyllene is shown to provide pain relief, anti-anxiety and antidepressant benefits. You'll find Caryophyllene in the strains Lavender, Candyland and Death Star.
Terpinolene: Terpinolene is also associated with lilac blossoms. It's found in apples, lilacs and tea tree. Terpinolene has shown anti-cancer, antifungal and antibacterial benefits. Relaxing and sedative effects are common. Terpinolene is found in the strains Super Lemon Haze, Sour Tangie and Shipwreck.
Geraniol: Geraniol is associated roses and is found in tobacco and lemon. Geraniol's health benefits include mosquito repellant, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Commonly reported effects include anxiety relief and boosted moods. Geraniol is found in the strains Lavender, Master Kush and Amnesia Haze.
Ocimene: Ocimene is a sweet and woody terpene, found in mint, parsley, pepper, basil, orchids and kumquats. Ocimene is an energizing terpene that may provide benefits as a decongestant, and in antiviral and antibacterial uses. It's found in strains such as Strawberry Cough, Golden Goat and Space Queen.
Limonene:
Unsurprisingly, Limonene is associated with citrus, and is found in juniper, citrus rinds and mint. It's an uplifting terpene whose most known health benefits include anti-anxiety and antidepressant. Limonene is found in the strains Liberty Haze, Cookies & Cream and Gorilla Glue 4.
Humulene: Humulene is associated with the earthy scent of cannabis, and is found in hops and coriander. Humulene is often used as an appetite suppresant and to reduce inflammation. Humulene is found in the strains Candyland, Death Star and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies.
Myrcene: Myrcene has a musky, earthy aroma. It's found in mango, hops, thyme and citrus. Myrcene's reported health benefits include as an insomnia aid, an anti-inflammatory and to provide pain relief. Both relaxation and sleep are commonly reported effects of Myrcene. You'll find Myrcene in the strain Jack Herer.
